FinTech Gate – Exclusive
Banking sources informed FinTech Gate that Hanaa Moharram, daughter of the late veteran banker Gamal Moharram, has been appointed as the Head of Standard Bank’s Representative Office in Egypt.
Standard Bank — the largest bank in Africa by assets — announced two days ago the official launch of its operations in Egypt through a representative office.
The bank stated that it aims to work with the Egyptian government and the private sector to support the country’s ongoing development efforts and strengthen its international ties through Standard Bank’s extensive network across the Gulf, China, the United States, and Sub-Saharan Africa.
According to the sources, Hanaa Moharram’s selection for this position comes in recognition of her extensive experience in the financial sector, her solid professional track record in several banking institutions, and her deep expertise in business development and international banking relationship management within the local market.
The opening of the representative office is considered a strategic step aimed at enhancing trade and investment flows between Egypt, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Middle East region—affirming Egypt’s pivotal role as a key gateway in the north-to-south African trade corridor.
- Through its Egypt office, Standard Bank aims to reinforce its commitment to driving Africa’s growth by supporting Egyptian companies seeking expansion across the continent and enabling global companies to invest in Egypt’s vibrant economy.
The establishment of Standard Bank’s office in Egypt also aligns with the group’s broader strategy for the Middle East and North Africa region, which began in 1997 in the United Arab Emirates and has since been strengthened by its more than 20-year presence in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). This expansion underscores the bank’s position as a leading financial partner in strengthening trade and investment corridors between the Gulf region and Sub-Saharan Africa.
