The Egyptian Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Unit hosts a delegation from the United Nations Office for Peacebuilding Support

The Egyptian Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Combating Unit hosted a high-level delegation from the United Nations Office of Peacebuilding and Peace Support (PBPSO) at its headquarters in Cairo on Sunday, April 19, 2026. The delegation was headed by H.E. Ms. Elizabeth Spehar – Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding and Peace Support, to strengthen cooperation and the exchange of expertise in combating financial crimes and supporting international peacekeeping and peacebuilding efforts.

This visit reflects the mutual interest of both parties in enhancing cooperation frameworks in peacekeeping and combating money laundering and terrorist financing, by strengthening communication and coordination channels. This comes in light of the current geopolitical tensions worldwide, which calls or intensified international collaborative measures to combat these crimes.

In this context, His Excellency judge/ Ahmed Said Khalil, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Egyptian Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Combating Unit, emphasized the pivotal role played by PBPSO at various levels, including its efforts in promoting peacebuilding, consolidating stability in member states, and supporting the development of criminal justice systems. During the visit, His Excellency Judge/ Ahmed Said Khalil emphasized on Egypt’s continuous commitment to strengthen its anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing system.

This commitment is demonstrated through the adherence to international standards issued by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), in response to the challenges posed by illicit financial flows to the integrity of the financial and economic system.

He also highlighted the pivotal role Egypt plays in promoting regional and international cooperation through its membership in organizations and networks specializing in preventing and combating various crimes. In this context, the Egyptian Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Combating Unit is committed to expanding its partnerships with the United Nations and its affiliated agencies and bodies, based on the belief that joint and collective action is the cornerstone of combating transnational crime.

The discussions also focused on several key pillars, emphasizing the links between organized crime, corruption, and money laundering. Furthermore, the meeting highlighted the necessity of capacity building and enhancing expertise of practitioners in this field, while placing a strategic priority on empowering women within the framework of combatting corruption and other crimes.

In this context, the Egyptian Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Combatting Unit presented a brief video outlining its mandate and core competencies in accordance with the AML law no. 80 of 2002 and its subsequent amendments. The video detailed the Unit’s leading contributions to professional development and institutional capacity building, it also featured its successful track record in regional and international cooperation and key milestones in the EMLCU activities.

In alignment with His Excellency Judge Ahmed Said Khalil’s affirmation of the Egyptian AML/CFT Unit’s commitment to being an active partner in the exchange of expertise, both parties emphasized the importance of strengthening joint cooperation. They concluded by assuring to intensify efforts to further strengthen the relevant institutional frameworks.

In conclusion, both parties affirmed the importance of supporting the global movement to combat financial crimes through cross-border cooperation and coordination. This collaborative approach aims to strengthen institutional resilience against current challenges, ultimately encouraging a more secure and stable environment at both regional and international levels.”
